Welcome.
This project seeks to underwrite the role of the Humanities in a 21st century university education as expanding knowledge emanating from diverse cultural traditions; as fostering students’ and faculty’s understanding of local, national and global issues as inextricably linked; and finally as strengthening a liberal education’s commitment to tolerance and responsible engagement. It is true that both within educational policy as well as in educational practice, institutions have recognized the need for cultivating social engagement and civic responsibility as compelling values. However, developing strategies for mobilizing successive generations of students and faculty into effective global citizens and sustaining such synergy between educational value and practice, remains a challenge. The GLARE Project will undertake the task of strengthening existing institutional and pedagogical practices and developing new and appropriate strategies for global learning at the University of Michigan-Dearborn.
